As we all look forward to settling down to the first episode of the new series of The Great British Bake Off on Wednesday night we’ve decided to look at where you can indulge in some sweet treats in Newcastle.

The BBC series is ready to welcome a new crop of contestants in its kitchen but if watching them rustle up all manner of mouth watering desserts gets your sweet tooth a-twitching (but doesn’t inspire you to make your own!) then there are a whole host of places in the Toon reading and willing to help you get your cake fix.

Here’s our guide…

Creams, Bigg Market

We’ll start with a place that is on many people’s lips at the moment, having opened at the end of last week.

Peer into Creams window and you’ll see a very well stocked ice cream cabinet but take a look at its menu and you’ll see that there’s also plenty to satisfy cake fans too.

Available for £2.95 each are: Luxury Chocolate Fudge Cake, Carrot Cake, Millionaires Choc and Caramel Cheesecake, Vanilla Brulee Cheesecake, Strawberry Waffle Cheesecake and American Pecan Pie.

Open Sunday – Thursday 11am – 11pm and Friday and Saturday 11am – midnight.

Kaspers, Westgate Road

Another dessert hotspot that has been satisfying Newcastle’s sweet tooth since opening earlier this year.

Nestled amongst the sundaes and waffles on Kaspers menu are a range of cakes that give plenty of food for thought.

For £4.50 (with cream or ice cream) you can tuck into: Luxury Hot Choc Fudge Cake, Chocolate Indulgence Pudding, Carrot Cake and Lemon Cheesecake.

Open Monday – Thursday 11am – 11pm; Friday & Saturday 11am – midnight and Sunday noon – 11pm.

Great British Cupcakery, Queen Street

With a name inspired by the show, this hidden gem would surely get the Mary Berry seal of approval. As well as taking orders for making cakes for birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings etc the Queen Street parlour is a haven for anyone wanting to treat themselves to a cupcake and cuppa.

You can enjoy your own Vintage Tea Party to mark special occasions too.

Cafe Royal, Nelson Street

Another place known for serving up afternoon tea, not that you need to make a booking for that to enjoy one of its delicious cakes.

Open Monday – Saturday 8am – 6pm and Sunday 10 – 4pm.

Lottie McPhees, Whitley Bay

The North Tyneside parlour is a favourite place for many people with a sweet tooth.

Its classic cupcake range, all priced at £1.50, includes Cookies and Cream, Lemon & Mandarin, Raspberry Crush and Red Velvet while its Speciality Range, available to order, includes Mint Cookie Crumble, Pistachio & Rose Water and Raspberry Ruffles.

Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am – 5pm.

Cup & Cake, Gateshead

Based in a coffee shop on Gateshead High Street, the popular family run business serve a wide range of teas, coffees, cakes, snacks, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks as well as providing bespoke cakes for special occasions.
